Knightsbridge Penthouse

Hans Place, London

2024 - 2026

Discreetly positioned behind the iconic silhouette of Harrods, this c.5000 sqft duplex penthouse overlooks the tranquil canopy of the Knightsbridge garden square below. The building is distinguished by an ornate, red-brick facade influenced by 17th-century Dutch and Queen Anne architectural heritage.

Hillier directed the interior architectural re-design and project managed this exceptional residence, extending to the refinement of the private lift interior and raised ground-floor communal entrance providing direct access to the property.

Our approach was defined by intelligent restraint and a reverence for inherent quality and mindful of the project’s rhythm, we needed to embrace while elevating the established spatial layout.

By carefully stripping back and masterfully reconditioning existing architectural details, we breathed new life into the fabric of the home, prioritising quiet restoration over wholesale replacement.

The transformation of the interior finishes is a testament to traditional artisanship. We preserved the original dark stained doors and panelling, entrusting them to master decorative painters who employed traditional techniques. Beginning with a dense, grainless dark stained base, they meticulously applied multiple layers of hand painted tones, creating a new surface imbued with warm richness, captivating movement, and subtle texture.

This bespoke woodwork sits in harmony with luminous new marmorino plaster walls and crystal-like marble. The property's original bronze hardware was intentionally retained with dark patina grounding the ethereal new palette and providing a tonal contrast.

To anchor the spaces, the existing timber floors and staircases were carefully sanded back to their raw, natural state and re-oiled to achieve a precise mid-tone, establishing a visual dialogue between the bespoke fitted furniture and architectural joinery elements.

In the master suite, the sanctuary of the bathroom was reimagined while honoring valuable Fior di Bosco marble retained in key zones, now juxtaposed with the purity of newly introduced white marble blocks. Accented by an elegant interplay of nickel, bronze & linen, the space becomes a quiet, calming and deeply sophisticated retreat.
